Heat Exposure and Injury Risk: What the Latest Research Reveals

As temperatures rise across the country, employers face more than just the risk of heat-related illnesses. New research suggests that workplace heat exposure may significantly increase the likelihood of on-the-job injuries, creating additional safety, operational, and financial challenges for businesses.

A groundbreaking study published in Environmental Health by researchers from George Washington University and Harvard University found a strong connection between hot working conditions and workplace injuries. The findings support OSHA’s ongoing efforts to establish a national heat injury and illness prevention standard.

The study, titled A Nationwide Analysis of Heat and Workplace Injuries, analyzed OSHA workplace injury data from 48 states during 2023. Researchers estimated that approximately 28,000 workplace injuries were attributable to heat exposure during that year alone. The risk of injury began to increase when the heat index reached approximately 85°F and rose significantly once temperatures exceeded 90°F.

One of the study’s most notable findings was that heat-related injury risks were not limited to outdoor occupations. While industries such as construction and agriculture are often associated with heat exposure, researchers found elevated injury rates across nearly every industry sector, including many indoor work environments. Manufacturing facilities, warehouses, transportation operations, and other workplaces can all experience conditions that increase employee risk during periods of extreme heat.

The research also highlighted the often-overlooked effects of heat on worker performance. While heat exhaustion and heat stroke remain serious concerns, elevated temperatures can impair concentration, coordination, judgment, and reaction time long before symptoms of heat illness become apparent. As a result, heat exposure may contribute to slips, trips, falls, equipment-related accidents, and other incidents that are not typically classified as heat-related injuries.

Lead author Barrak Alahmad summarized the findings by noting that while extreme heat can result in fatal heatstroke, even moderate hot conditions can subtly increase the risk of workplace injuries. This suggests that the true impact of heat exposure may be far more widespread than previously recognized.

For employers, the findings reinforce the importance of proactive heat safety measures. Providing access to water, shaded or cooled recovery areas, appropriate rest breaks, employee training, and acclimatization procedures can help reduce injury risk while supporting workforce productivity. Organizations that prioritize heat safety may also reduce workers’ compensation claims, operational disruptions, and other costs associated with workplace injuries.

The study further found that states with established workplace heat exposure standards experienced lower rates of heat-related injuries. As OSHA continues to advance rulemaking efforts related to heat illness prevention, employers should consider reviewing their existing safety programs and preparing for potential future compliance requirements.
